Palm Sunday ends the period of Lent and opens Holy Week. During this day the church remember the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, cheered by the crowd with branches of olive and palm. Assisi celebrates this moment with a series of rituals in almost all parishes, churches and basilicas of the city. The procession knocks three times on the door of the church, before it is open; signifying the door of Paradise, closed behind Adam and Eve after their expulsion and reopened by Christ with the sacrifice of his death. The branches of olive trees and palms are blessed and then burned and the ashes will be used in celebrations of Ash Wednesday the following year.
The solemn Mass of the Sacred Chrism preceding the Easter Tridium is celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Rufino This day is dedicated to the blessing of holy oils, essential tools to celebrate the different sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Order, Anointing of the sick. This rite is placed close to the Easter Tridium for the effectiveness derived from the mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ.
The Easter Tridium begins on Holy Thursday and ends on Saturday with the great Holy Saturday vigil. This is the day when the Church, recalling the Last Supper of Jesus, celebrates the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The faithful go to receive the Blessed Sacrament in several churches in memory of the pain suffered by Jesus Christ. In remembrance of the fourteenth century Scavigliazione, the ceremony of Deposition of the Crucifix will be held in Saint Rufino Cathedral.
On Good Friday, at 7.30 am, the traditional procession takes place that will transfer the Dead Christ from the Cathedral of Saint Rufino to the Basilica of Saint Francis. On the way there are brief stops in cloistered monasteries.
The medieval, ancient procession in which all Confraternities along the city's historical center is entirely lit by torches takes place at 7.30pm departing from the Cathedral of Saint Rufino with the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows to get to the Basilica of Saint Frances to return together with the Dead Christ.
Prior to Easter Sunday, on Saturday, Assisi honors the burial of Jesus Christ and his descent to limbo. It will light the Easter candle that will be off for the Ascension, to symbolize the presence and the departure of Christ among men. All the major churches in the area will follow the Easter Vigil that will bring the Easter proclamation.
Easter Sunday in the City begins with a series of solemn exclusively religious activities. This Sunday commemorates the Resurrection of Christ as a transition from mortal to immortal with the morning liturgies and then continues with Masses and vespers. In some places you can participate in events such as parades with the statues made bow.
Easter Monday, remembering what happened at dawn, when an angel consoled women at the tomb of Jesus, is full of religious celebrations in the morning, and then evening vespers.

CANTAMAGGIO OF TERNI (Festival steeped in tradition)
Cantamaggio is a popular festival that dates from the late nineteenth century and is part of those seasonal rites celebrating the return of spring.
Long ago young people "Maggiaioli", carrying the "May" (a spray of yellow flowers on which to hang a lantern) went were from house to house singing ditties and receiving in exchange eggs, food or money. The ramosciello was then planted in the ground as a sign of prosperity.
The party, with the years, has taken different features and characters to become a popular folklore festival led by floats. Established in 1896, the event has been enriched over time, through staging of floats depicting the spring and the issues: the revival of nature, the fertility of the fields, eros. On floats, prepared by the various communities in the suburbs of Terni, are scenes of daily life with the Maggiorali improvising orchestras of popular songs. The illuminated floats parade into the night with bands and complex folklore.

Calendimaggio (in ancient time, the "calendar" were the first days of the month) was originally a profane festival, even though over the course of the centuries, it has come to include the figure of St. Francis and the carefree days of his youth.
The festival lasts for three days and is held on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday in May. It is an explosion of joy and vigor, music and song, costumes and flowers.
This is truly the celebration and exaltation of springtime, which is expressed in people and things through the sheer joy of living.
The purpose of this event, which is probably the one that is felt most deeply by the people of Assisi, who participate dressed in traditional costumes that have faithful replicas, is to win the "palio" or prize.
It is a contest between the two quarters into which the city is divided, the "Magnifica parte de Sotto", or the lower part of the city, and the "Nobilissima parte de Sopra", or upper part of the city. A jury awards the prize to the quarter that has better distinguished itself in terms of costumes, songs, games and contests.
